What Is Delta 8

What Exactly Is Delta 8 THC

According to a statement made by the National Cancer Institute, delta-8-THC can be defined as an analogue of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) with antiemetic, anxiolytic, appetite-stimulating, analgesic, and neuroprotective properties. [Delta-8-THC] binds to the cannabinoid G-protein coupled receptor CB1, located in the central nervous system…This agent exhibits a lower psychotropic potency than [delta-9-THC], the primary form of THC found in cannabis.

Although it is chemically different from delta-9-THC by only a few atomic bonds but can still offers a potent high of its own. While it only exists naturally as a fractions of a percent of the overall hemp plant, companies are finding value in concentrating esoteric cannabinoids for their unique effects and applications. CBD and THC companies from around the world are currently producing Delta 8 Vapes, Gummies, Tinctures and Flower that demonstrates these properties.

How Is Delta 8 THC Made

The extraction process to remove the cannabinoid from the Hemp Plant to create a product strong enough to produce noticeable effects isn’t an easy tack. But it’s very possible. Commercial extraction processors are using methods such as selective breeding, distillation, and molecular isolation to create concentrates that have a higher percentage.

In 2004 Dr. Mechoulam filed a patent (US Patent Number US20040143126A1) for a recipe to convert the common CBD cannabinoid derived from Hemp into Delta-8 and Delta-9 THC. This method is called isomerization. The described methods produce higher yields and higher purity compared to prior methods.

Other companies are employing “thin film distillation” of harvested CBD flower and trim. Through this process, manufacturers utilize vacuums, temperature manipulation and scientific equipment to convert the .3% Delta-9 THC to Delta-8.

Possible Benefits

A wide range of preclinical, clinical studies and anecdotal reports are uncovering some of the unique therapeutic potential and properties of this amazing cannabinoid that is found in Hemp. Keep in mind that as a minor cannabinoid, there’s still a great deal that we don’t know about delta-8-THC, which suggests a cautious approach toward using it.

Anti-Inflammatory and Pain Relief Effects

A 2018 preclinical study published in “Cannabis and Cannabinoid Research” found that delta-8-THC may help to diminish pain and inflammation in corneal injury in mice. The research found that when applied topically, assisted in pain reduction, and reduced inflammation through its effects on the CB1 receptors. Another preclinical study on rats also reported that the compound delivers pain relief, but that tolerance to the cannabinoid developed rapidly.

Potential Anxiety Relief

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, delta-8-THC displays anxiety-reducing qualities similar to delta-9-THC. While there is currently little clinical literature investigating its anti-anxiety potential, anecdotal reports claim that it’s consumption may results in a very calm, focused high, without the anxiety that can sometimes accompany delta-9-THC.

Relief From Nausea

The nausea fighting potential of delta-8-THC was reported in a 1995 study published in “Life Sciences.” The study followed eight pediatric cancer patients over two years and found that no vomiting occurred when patients ingested delta-8-THC before and for 24 hours after cancer treatment. The study reported very few side effects.

May Help Stimulate The Appetite

Delta-8-THC may also help to stimulate the appetite. Research conducted on mice and published in a 2004 edition of “Pharmacology, Biochemistry and Behavior” found that a low dose of this cannabinoid administered to mice over 50 days resulted in a 22% increase in food intake compared with controls. The research also reported that it increased food intake significantly more than delta-9-THC, which is a reputed appetite stimulant.
